SIGNIFICANT DATES

1784

Methodist Episcopal Church organized in the United States.

1806

First Methodist circuit rider visited Morehouse Parish.

1807

First itinerant preacher assigned to Washita Circuit.

1812

Louisiana moved from Western Conference to Tennessee Conference.

1813

Louisiana transferred to newly organized Mississippi Conference.

1826

John G. Jones preached in Bastrop. He was the earliest documented pastor at the Bastrop First Methodist Church.

1835

Washita Circuit officially took name Monroe Circuit.
Louisiana transferred from Mississippi to Arkansas Conference.

1838

Monroe District established.

1840

Louisiana returned to Mississippi Conference from Arkansas.

1844

Name changed to Bastrop Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

1847

Louisiana Conference organized with Bastrop in Monroe District.

1848

The first "open door" conference.

1853

Each charge was encouraged to send a lay delegate to conference.

1855

Bastrop congregation moved from old log structure on North Washington St. to new frame church on South Washington Street. Louisiana Annual Conference met in Bastrop Dec. 12, 1855.

1856

Bastrop Episcopal Church, South incorporated for 25 years.

1862

Louisiana Annual Conference met in Bastrop, Dec. 1 - 13.

1872

Bastrop transferred from Monroe District to Delhi District.

1884

Bastrop congregation built their first brick Church.

1889

Old parsonage next door to the church sold and new parsonage acquired on South Washington Street.
1924 Second brick (present) building constructed.

1928

Pipe organ purchased.

1936

Women's Society of Christian Service replaced W.M.S.

1939

Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal South, and Methodist Protestant merged and became the Methodist Church.

1940

The title "Presiding Elder" changed to "District Superintendent".
Wesleyan Service Guild organized.

1943

Name of Epworth League changed to Methodist Youth Fellowship.

1948

Educational Annex to second brick (present) building completed.
Conference year changed to begin and end in June.

1964

Educational Building completed.

1968

Methodist Church merged with Evangelical United Brethren to become the United Methodist Church.
Bastrop began using candles and acolytes as part of worship services.
United Methodist Women organization replaced W.S.C.S.

1972

Brick Parsonage built in Space Estates.

1982

Retired Minister's Home purchased.

1984

Activities Center completed.

1988

Parking lot north of the Activities Center was completed.
1992 Historical room established to preserve church records and significant papers.
